[ Chinese Version ]
As the Chinese University Music Department Head and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra Ex-Composer-in-Residence, Professor Chan Wing Wah
used his learning experiances as an example to encourage the new generation not to give up ambitious easily.
Although Professor Chan is a renowned composer in Asia, he hasn't started his musical life until once he came across Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 at fifteen. He said that bitterness
and happiness are twins always accompanying his work. Whenever planning and composing songs, he felt extremely painful as his spirit and his body was overloaded.
But, every time his pieces were introduced to public, the feeling of success could make him forget the pain and pressure behind. He strongly
reminded us that every process must be full of pain, but the joy of result can always compensate it. On top of this, we can learn through the process.
Besides, Professor Chan talked about the subtle relation between the US Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, Music Director of Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra Wong Tai-tek and music.
Music enlightened their thinking and leaded them to success. Besides, Professor Chan shared his expirences in Moscow. Russians' living standard is quite low in general.
A professinal musicians can only have a piece of bread and coffee as their dinner. They are lacked physically but are rich in mind. They value the chance to cope with
world class virtuoso. The joy of it can compensate all physical shortage. Russian's interests in literature, ballet, fine art, etc. are not affected
by long term economic depression. Professor Chan believed that anything has two sides. Happiness and bitterness are only subjective views. If a person determined to finish a task,
whatever how hard it is, he won't blame it becasue all difficulties become the joy of achievement again and again.
Finally, Professor Chan encouraged the students to learn how to enjoy art. According to some research, people have higher creativity perform better in most aspects.
Professor Chan claimed that present education system concentrates on training students' power of reason but ignores the development of feelings. If stduents can build up a strong power of
observation through art, they will be benefited in the future.
