'English lesson in the 3 rd period?'
'No. It's the Magic lesson, not English. Silly.'
Why? Were the MST students still having lessons in the post-exam
period? Yes, they were, but only on July 9, 2004 - our annual Student-Teachers
Day (or ST Day in short) ¡V a much treasured tradition of the school.
It is a day when senior students teaching junior students on topics
ranging from ordinary school subjects to exotic ones like magic.
To ensure effective teaching, there was a day set aside for the
'young teachers' to make preparation for their lessons in school.
On July 7, while the junior form students were having a lovely
holiday, all Form 4 and Form 6 student teachers had to come back
to school for to work hard for their lessons.
On the ST Day morning, the student teachers were all set to enter
the junior form classrooms to "fight their battle".
"The students were so excited. You know, I have been shouting
'Keep quiet' for more than half of the lesson time, but they never
stopped." A Form 6 student-teacher exclaimed.
This year we had some extraordinary topics such as "Hairstyle
Design", "Soccer History" and "Magic", and some traditional subjects
like Mathematics and Religious Studies. It was a common practice
among the student teachers to use multimedia and all kinds of 'props'
to make the lessons more interesting. Laughter and cheers were
heard almost in every junior form classroom.
In the afternoon, there was a whole school assembly in the hall.
After all the students were happily seated, the Drama Club performed
a drama about a student teacher's unforgettable classroom experience.
Then the school Chinese Kung Fu team members, together with two
teachers, gave a powerful performance on the stage. Following this
explosive act, there came another hilarious drama performance,
an MST version of the Japanese TV program "GTO", featuring Ms Leung,
Ms Wong, Mr Lee and Mr Pang, and three students.
The much awaited highlight of the afternoon finally came when
our principal and teachers accompanied by the Dance Club students
streamed out of the back stage, positioned themselves and took
their first step of Cha Cha Dance with the music. The dance brought
the atmosphere to the hottest. The principal got an encore from
the audience and repeated the dance. She also shared her feelings
about her eleven years in MST, which brought the assembly to a
touching end.
After the assembly, as part of the ST Day tradition, there was
a basketball match between the teachers and the students. The teachers'
team won in this exciting game.
The ST Day had been a fruitful day for both the students and the
student teachers. "We needed to prepare a lot for a 35-minute lesson.
It was time-consuming," a Form 6 student-teacher said. "It's hard
to be a teacher." How about being a student on ST Day? "There are
so many strange but exciting subjects in the world," a Form 3 student
said. "It's good to learn some extra but practical skills.
