To many people, receiving a graduation certificate from the principal is an unforgettable moment. This certainly reminds people of many things, including success, failure, as well as happy and unhappy moments in each of their school lives. Our graduates experienced the same excitement during our Speech Day 2008, which was held on 29th November, 2008.
Before getting what they had been longing for, these graduates were given the chance to be enlightened. The remarks from our Supervisor, Mr. Michael Lai Kam Cheung, JP, and the Principal's report certainly reminded them of our school's achievements in public exams and extracurricular activities, which were also their achievements. They surely treasured the chance to learn from Professor Michael Siu-Cheung Tam's stimulating speech. At the beginning, they might doubt if Professor Tam, the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, could understand what they were interested in. However, after a few minutes, they were absorbed by the attractive and meaningful speech. The idea that a student should choose a subject that they are interested in was nothing new to them, but the encouragement from Professor Tam will surely enhance their choosing the right subject a few years from now. Soon, they will also find out why Professor Tam values generic skills so highly.
Then the focus of the Speech Day came. Our graduates went up to the stage one by one and got their precious certificates. Their smiling faces would appear not only in their graduation photos, but also in the memory of the guests, the parents, the teachers and the students in the hall. What were they thinking about at that moment? "It's amazing how time flies and it seems like only yesterday that we met," the graduates might wonder. The atmosphere of joy might help them to look back on their school lives and the good old days. Was it a moment of joy or sadness?
The excitement of the presentation of awards afterwards might help them to wake up from the nostalgia, but the graceful songs from the School Choir would once again let them indulge themselves in all kinds of feelings.
The Speech Day symbolized that our graduates had travelled through their secondary school life. However, it did not only symbolize the end of an old stage, but also the start of a new one. All M.S.T. students can also picture this from time to time-- receiving their certificate on stage with no regrets. This picture can push us to strive for our best!
