Harvard Dreaming

Prestigious universities like Oxford, Cambridge or Harvard seem so far away from us that direct communication with them exists only in dreams. However, our dreams came true on 23 March, 2009, when a number of Harvard university students, with one helper from the University of Hong Kong, visited our school.

What made this dream come true? Our alumni, Chik Yin Yan and Lee Ka Chun, enrolled in an exchange program organized by the University of Hong Kong and Harvard University. They were required to organize some programmes for the Harvard students and they decided to bring them to our school for a day visit. Every one of us was so excited about it, as they are the top students in the world.

Our School Ambassadors served as their guides. They were especially impressed by our beautiful fishpond. During lunchtime, they shared their recollections of high school and university life with our School Ambassadors. Afterwards, they went to the playground to join Muscular Rank, an S.U. activity. They played in the football session, the ping-pong session, and the basketball session, which seemed to fascinate them most. They also competed with us in a game called ˇ§Knock outˇ¨! Unfortunately, our students ˇ§knocked them outˇ¨ so quickly that they had to wait for their next turn soon.

We really admire their talent and vision. In addition, their proficiency in different languages is amazing. All of them have a lot of titles and responsibilities, which keep them busy every day. It is obvious that these help them to maintain a balanced life and develop a comprehensive world view. In addition, we feel that they are very helpful people and are ready to serve others.

During the sharing session, the students from Harvard University compared school life in Hong Kong to that in the US. They described our curriculum as intensive and career-based. In fact, we could also feel the contrast between the two systems. As Hong Kong students, we tend to focus on relatively narrow fields of learning and academic achievements. In contrast, the U.S. students are more all-round. Without a doubt, it is essential for us to develop in different aspects, in order to become competitive in society.

This is undoubtedly a valuable and unforgettable experience for our students: a dream come true. Mr. Chan Tsz Kin, member of the External Affairs Committee, said he was glad to meet with the oversea students. He was proud that our students had shown our hospitality and the atmosphere had been full of joy. On behalf of the committee, he would like to express his gratitude towards our alumni, who introduced our school to the visitors, our School Ambassadors, as well as all teachers and students, for their contribution and participation
