Eggs Falling Competition

Have you ever thrown out of your window accidentally? But for our MST students, they threw something deliberately-some fragile eggs.

In fact, it was the "Egg falling competition" organized by the Science Society. The aim of the activity is to promote the application of scientific principles in daily life. Students participating in the competition must construct something, based on certain scientific principles, to protect the egg, so the egg can "land" safely on the ground. The closer the egg gets to the cross-marked on the ground, the higher marks the team gets.

According to teacher-in-charge, Mrs Lou, our biology teacher, this event was creative and could raise students' high order thinking skills with a lot of fun. She suggested that more activities of such kind should be organized.

The principle behind the egg-falling and the prevention of egg-breaking was carefully explained during a "lecture" given to the students, who mainly come from F.1 -F.3. They learnt a lot about air resistance and a ShenZhou V analog from Mr. Chui.

After the "lecture", students were busily discussing the design of their model and assembling the materials. A form 2 student commented," It is easy to say, but difficult to do."

With dozens of students gathering together at the ground, gazing up to the fifth floor of the school, shouting up loud, the eggs were ready to experience the power of nature-the gravity. Which egg can survive? The appearance of the "egg set" cannot tell you a very reliable answer.

One of the student commented, "Before throwing the egg, we were hopeful, but after the egg rested on the ground, we felt sad, because the egg was broken." Shortly after that, an egg wrapped in black plastic bag traveled at a high speed right down to the ground, hitting exactly the center of the target. All the students and teachers applauded and cheered.

A student whose egg remained intact after the violent collision said, "The competition should be made open to public to all the students but not to just the members of the Science Society." He said that this event has triggered his interest in physics.

In my opinion, it is just so nice to have such an exciting competition in such a nice afternoon in MST. The competition bound the students and teachers together although sometimes it cost a lot of eggs.
