This year the Book Festival was held from 25 th to 29 th of April. During this
one-week period a series of interesting and meaningful activities were organized.
However, there were several activities beforehand, namely the Slogan Contest
and the Bookmark Design Contest which paved the way for the upcoming event-
the Book Festival.
As the Book Festival started a tight schedule followed. We had a 10-minute
morning session about book sharing, a talk with students' performances in the
whole school assembly, a film show after school, a book display and some exhibitions
throughout the week, etc.
If you ask me which activity the students and teachers participated the most
in,
I would say it was the Talk and Performances which was held on the 27 th of
April. It was hold as a whole school assembly in the hall and we were honoured
to have two special guests, Dr. Audrey Lim and Dr. Samuel Leung from the Reading
Association, HK Branch. Dr. Lim gave us a talk on poem appreciation. As she
used a relaxed and lively manner to present her main theme and provided us
with lots of daily examples, all of us enjoyed her talk. On the other hand,
Dr. Leung talked about reading. He stated many advantages of reading and persuaded
us to "read more" so that we can "gain more". Surely all of us got this important
message. Between the talks there were several performances which were presented
by our students, such as solo verse speaking, story telling and song singing.
These performances showed us the great achievements of our students.
Although it took quite a long time for the students and teachers to sit in
the hall, however, all of us not only enjoyed, but also appreciated and gained
from the experience.
About the Film Show after school, we had a touching foreign film- "Tuesdays
with Morrie" and some romantic films from different countries, like Korea
and Japan . Through watching films, we could be stimulated to learn more about
foreign language and culture instead of just knowing about the plots.
The Book Display spread a nice reading atmosphere among our school.
Throughout the Book Festival, an English Book Bus stopped at our school playground.
It did not carry any passengers but English books. There was a large variety
of story books from the publishers of Oxford , Stanford and Longman, etc. Whenever
you looked down at the playground, the Book Bus was surrounded by a crowd of
students and teachers. Some of them were reading quietly, while some of them
were choosing their favourites.
Besides the English Book Bus there was another Book Display-the Chinese Book
Display on the covered playground. The display publisher was Culture Book.
Books about Chinese culture, poetry, Japanese living habits and even about
beauty and craftsmanship were shown. This display was welcomed by students
and teachers just like the Book Bus. Some of the books were so popular that
they even sold out before the display ended!
Apart from these whole school activities, lots of interesting and exciting
activities were held. For example, in S.1, there was a Story Telling Competition.
In S.4, there was an activity called "Dramatization of Stories". The English
Society also organized a special activity called "Literature Tour" during the
Book Festival.
Soon after the Book Festival ended, the prize winning slogans and bookmark
designs were exhibited on the walls of the school corridors. This year the
Book Festival ended, but the reading atmosphere among us will surely be promoted
continuously!
